My oldest son has gone off to the Army. He's at Fort Jackson, South Carolina for his basic and then moves on to Fort Huachuca (sounds like - Whahchuka) Arizona for advanced individual training (AIT) in Military Intelligence. My boy is going into his adult life.

He was a Boy Scout and was in ROTC in high school attaining the rank of Major. He was also Drum Major for the marching band. He has entered the army as a PFC because of his ROTC, college and tests and will graduate as a corporal. We have received two phone calls from him and he says things are good. Today's call was only for a minute. That is not long enough. He said he has written to us about his unit so we can write him. It can be hard being a parent. I miss him greatly and am so very proud.

I am very proud and I do miss him, though I know he's a man now and has a life to lead. He won't be in Iraq. His job will be many miles from a combat zone; thousands of miles. Satellites are clean and safe.

He called Saturday and said he will send his unit address so we can write to him. They only give them one minute for a call and he has to stand in line. Hopefully he will call again next weekend and I will be here to talk to him. I still find it hard to imagine him in combat gear marching through the forest. He is the computer type of person. But, I taught him to shoot and he is a good rifleman. I know he will do great.

There is bad and good news. My oldest son is being discharged from basic training on a medical because his asthma came back after almost five years. He said the pollen was so thick they had to wipe it off of their weapons and gear. He only had three more weeks to go. The good news is I have an uncle who was in MI for 30 years (20-Army & 10-civilian) and said he will contact people he knows to see if my son can continue as a civilian. Hopefully all is not lost with his MI career. Sofar, my son isn't really upset about it. He said, "Well, shit happens." And he will have about $2,000 for the time he has been in, so that will help him.

I haven't mentioned my son's name because if he does go into MI, that would be a security breach and might endanger him and others.
